I wrote this piece for an early round of NYC Midnight’s microfiction contest. For each round you’re given a genre, a word that must be included in the story, and an action that must be included. The prompt was sci fi / ‘normal’ / floating.
“The child – droid – floats face down in the river. The body – the parts – slowly bobs as the water undulates. It’s the fourth time Detective Jason Clark has recreated the scene with a holographic projection. He plays it from all angles. The recording taken by the teenagers who stumbled upon the unclothed, discarded parts this morning. The ones from the first responding officers when they arrived on the scene. The ones taken when the police brought the parts to shore.”
